Van life has reached mainstream popularity in recent years, especially during quarantine. More and more people are choosing remote work over office jobs and taking their lives to the road. Many romanticize the idea of modern day nomading, but it actually comes with a lot more work than you might think.

Car enthusiast Jason Grzesik gives his opinions on what to look out for before starting your van conversion journey. The biggest thing to square away before you start any conversion is to determine your budget. Your budget will guide your van choice, and how many bells and whistles (or shall we say, creature comforts) you can afford in your build.

Once you have a budget in place, you need to figure out your timeline. Are you looking to complete your van build in the summer season just in time to leave for the winter? Or is it a project you are completing in your free time?

Lastly, you need to plan out what the essentials in your van will be. If you plan on working remotely, you’re going to need to set up an electrical system to power all your gadgets. Most van lifers also incorporate a freshwater and gray water tank, some kind of heating element for cooking, and storage into their builds. You can design your van as basic or as detailed as you want, but keep in mind that it all comes at a cost.

Be sure to research the best methods for insulating your van and installing proper wiring to make sure the shell of your build is sitting on a great foundation. What are you waiting for? Get after it!
