If you are into automotive photography and want to take your skills to the next level, then location scouting is a great way to add more interest to your photographs. Unique backgrounds and locations are just as important as photographing the car itself!

A car enthusiast at heart, Jason Grzesik translates his hobby in the form of photography. For years, he has enjoyed documenting the excitement of car culture through his own lens. Today he shares his tips for how to scout locations for car photography.

  1. Consider the color and make of the car when thinking about locations to take photos of it in. You can create a subtle story in the photograph by placing the car in a setting that makes sense for the car to be in. Colors in the background can compliment the car’s own color.
  2. If you are using a drone to take photographs, make sure the area you want to photograph in allows them. Pick an area that has interesting patterns in the landscape or a unique road shape.
  3. Visit locations at different times of the day to see what the lighting is like. The golden hour is an excellent time for photography. This is the hour after sunrise and the hour before sunset.
  4. Keep note of locations you spot while driving around in your everyday life. Obviously, you should pull over first to take pictures or write down the location!
  5. Parking lots are pretty common locations to take car photographs in. If you want something unique, look for interesting architecture, big open spaces, abandoned buildings, natural settings, etc.
