For anyone looking to turn their creative passion into an income stream, knowing how to market yourself online is essential. If you want to be taken seriously, you need to create a professional website for your work.
As a car enthusiast, Jason Grzesik has a passion for documenting car culture through photography. Today he shares his tips for making a website for your photography business.
- Go through your current photography portfolio. What kinds of pictures do you take? Some people specialize in a specific area, such as weddings or portrait photography, while others have a whole range of subject matter. Sort your portfolio into different categories – when you set up your site, you’ll have a different section for each type.
- In each section, pick out 20 to 30 of your best photographs. You want quality rather than quantity.
- Decide what your goals are with your website. Are you looking for more clients? Are you a beginner looking to get your name out there? Do you want to sell your images? Think about this when deciding what your site will look like.
- Invest in a website builder. There are free options out there, but it’s not a good idea to use these if you want a professional appearance because they have ads and the domain will have a “.websitebuilder.com” at the end of it.
- Choose a domain name that is simple, such as your name or the name of your business without numbers or underscores.
