Are you a photography hobbyist looking to take turn your hobby into a professional career? No matter where you are in your career or what you like to photograph, a professional portfolio is essential for finding and attracting clients.

Jason Grzesik is an expert in personal finance and is passionate about car photography. For years, he has enjoyed documenting the excitement of car culture through his own lens. Today, he shares his top tips for creating a professional photography portfolio.

  1. Get on the internet. This is essential for any kind of business these days, especially businesses based on visual media. Invest in at least a basic website to host your portfolio online, and get on social media sites such as Instagram or Behance so you can share your work.
  2. Select your best 15-30 photographs to go into your portfolio. It is important not to upload every single image you have ever done. People won’t look through all of them, and they will typically only take a few seconds to decide whether to hire you or not. You should only include your best work.
  3. Only include the work that you want to do in the future. If you have really good photographs of cars, but you would rather be doing wedding photography, then curate your portfolio to appeal to people who are planning weddings.
  4. Update your portfolio regularly. Swap out some of those older photographs for new ones. As you continue in your career, your skills will improve. Your portfolio should change to reflect that.
