Years before the Ford Model T was available, a German man named Karl Benz created the first precursor to the cars we know and love today. The first automobile looks similar to those old penny farthing bikes and was patented in 1885 with the world first-ever combustible engine.

Bertha Benz, Carl’s wife, became the first woman to drive a car when she took her husband’s horseless carriage on a daring 65 mile road trip with her two sons. She did this without his knowledge or permission, and by doing so proved to the world the capabilities of automobiles.
